Some were framed; some had been taken off frames and needed to be rolled and packed. Pak Mail Pittsburgh sent a crew of two men to my house armed with cardboard packaging custom cut for each framed painting and boxes for the rolled ones. Each painting was wrapped in protective paper and padding was added inside the cardboard packs. It took them an entire day to get everything packaged and ready for my movers! When I unpacked them in Pittsburgh, all were in perfect condition. More recently, I visited Pittsburgh and picked up about a dozen smaller paintings that I had loaned someone. Again, the paintings were individually wrapped. This time Pak Mail arranged the shipping. The paintings arrived, again in perfect condition, in two sturdy boxes lined with styrofoam pads. Pictures for instance can cost much more to pack and ship than the item originally cost. From experience there doesn't seem to be much difference in price and service between the various shipping firms auction houses recommend - at least until I discovered Pak Mail's Pittsburgh Crate and Ship. What a difference. My enquiry for packing and shipping costs for my item (a framed painting) was responded to that same day and a quote price given. I was very surprised because, based on previous experiences, I was really expecting a much higher estimate and probably not for a day or two at that. Sometimes I have had to actually chase people for their prices. Their price included complimentary pick up and basic insurance cover which I was happy with. So I asked them to go ahead. I gave them my card details and within a day or two I received a UPS tracking number. I should say here that I thought the price would be for a basic USPS service so was pleasantly surprised that it would be UPS. What was even better was that the UPS service was super fast and my painting arrived safely just a couple of days later. Again my expectations were over-turned. I had expected the painting to arrive bubble-wrapped in a double sided peanut filled box of much larger proportions than the painting - which is why it all costs so much. But it didn't. It arrived perfectly and securely packed in a stout lidded box with tight, sealed packing straps keeping it all together. I opened it up to find my painting protected by card-board and then wrapped in gloss paper and thin bubble wrap. Nothing could have damaged it; it was simply thoughtful handling and someone really looking at the job and deciding what would be the best and most cost-effective approach. When I recently had to ship some personal belongings and precious family heirlooms--some almost two hundred years old--from Irwin, PA, east of Pittsburgh, to Barcelona, I got got in touch with Pak Mail in Cranberry. I was on an extremely tight deadline and nervous because of the value of the heirlooms. Mike MacDonald and his wife Ana Duran came almost immediately, and on a Sunday no less, (it turns out that they live in my home town!!) to weigh items and take measurements. They sent an estimate in a few days and came shortly thereafter to pick up the items. Jan 8, 2011 I have never dealt with a more helpful, honest, friendly and professional company in my decades of doing business, domestically and internationally, and particularly in the recent years of bidding online at auctions across the other side of the world. I live in Sydney, Australia...way Downunder, and committing to buy something at an American auction house is always fraught with apprehension because of the enormous costs of packing and shipping, which makes most purchases a total waste of money. In this instance the goods were large, heavy bulky items but fragile as well and it seemed like a complete pipe dream to even contemplate bidding. I contacted all the contractors recommended by Dargate Auctions, some didn't even answer..all the rest reassured me that i was insane. THEN, I received an estimate from Pak Mail Pittsburgh Crate & Ship which convinced me there was a God afterall. From there Mike MacDonald, the owner, went to no end of trouble to iron out dozens of details, looking for cheaper and better ways to ship to Australia, and eventually came up with a price that included hours of free time, [whilst fighting off the inclement Winter weather] picking up and inspecting the goods for me prior to the auction,and then picking it all up and delivering it all carefully crated to New Jersey to the shipping company for delivery to me in Sydney. During this entire process, we maintained a constant, humorous email exchange so that all the while it was nothing but a pleasure doing business together. These people should be awarded as the Business of the Year, Knighted by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, and made an Honorary Aussie with Perpetual Swimming rights at Bondi Beach whenever he visits Australia. WELL DONE MIKE... Jan 8, 2011 I had a very pleasant experience with Pak Mail Pittsburg when searching to ship a Sony G90 Home Theater Projector to Wisconsin. This a a very heavy and fragile device that is to large and heavy for anything but common carrier truck freight. Not knowing anyone to help in Pittsburg with picking up this item, packing it for truck freight and making sure the whole process went smooth... I also forgot to mention this was the week before Christmas that this needed to be done. My new found friends at Pak Mail did a fabulous job and at a very fair price. The projector made it to Wisconsin safe and sound with no fuss or hassles. Pak Mail clearly demonstrated they can provide exactly what was needed even with unusual and very challenging requirements that were presented in this case.
